Jewelry & Ornaments

The Center houses a large collection of antique and ornamental jewelry. In 2000, Dr. Helen Mamarchev, a former associate vice president of student affairs at the University of Florida, gave the Center a large collection of Bulgarian and Macedonian women’s ornamental jewelry from the 14th through the 19th centuries.  The museum display consists of 51 silver items, including pafte (two-piece belt buckles), kosichnik (head ornaments) and prochelnik (forehead decorations), plus bracelets, earrings and necklaces — some decorated with mother of pearl, semi-precious stones and colored glass. The set also includes a 14th century Byzantine gold coin.
